I was reading a decorating article in the paper the other day. Maybe you saw it. It was about what type of house other cultures find comfortable.
It said that Americans seem to think they must have a separate room for every activity, where most other cultures cannot afford that luxury. Having guests sleep in the dining room doesn't bother some people.
One little tidbit that I had never heard before was that while Americans number their houses consecutively down the street, the Japanese number houses by the oldest one on the street first. it does seem right for a society that venerates age. It made me wonder, are there still more ways to number houses that just don't occur to me?
Has anyone traveled to another country where the house numbering system would seem unusual to us?
